PLA (Polyactinic Acid) wird normalerweise aus den Zuckern in Maisstärke, Maniok oder Zuckerrohr hergestellt. PLA ist 100% biologisch abbaubar, 100% kompostierbar und CO2-neutral. Um aus Mais eine Art Kunststoff (PLA) zu machen, werden die Maiskörner mit Schwefeldioxid in heißem Wasser vermischt, damit sich alle Bestandteile dieser Mischung wieder zu Stärke, Proteinen und Fasern entwickeln. Aus den Fasern wird Garn hergestellt und daraus kann ein Beutel entwickelt werden. Standardmäßig ist das Logo von „bio bag compostable – made of corn“ auf die Tüte gedruckt.
